IPL's Value Surges to $20.6bn: Outpaces NFL and Captures Investor Attention

The Indian Premier League (IPL) has seen its value surge to an estimated $20.6bn, according to a report by US-based investment bank Houlihan Lokey, marking a 10.3% increase over the past year. This places IPL among the world's most valuable sports brands, with only the NFL ranking ahead in per-match brand value. Royal Challengers Bengaluru, the champions of the past two seasons and home to former Indian captain Virat Kohli, retained its status as the league's most valuable franchise with a brand value of $312m. The team was acquired by a consortium including US asset management giant Blackstone for nearly $1.8bn, the most expensive franchise transaction in IPL history. Rajasthan Royals was also sold for $1.65bn by Indian steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal and SII vaccine billionaire Adar Poonawalla. Houlihan Lokey's Harsh Talikoti noted, 'Cricket's evolution into a globally owned, institutionally backed asset class has accelerated further in 2026, with the IPL continuing to redefine the global sports landscape.' The league, which began in 2008, has become a top revenue earner for the Board of Control for Cricket in India and was estimated to generate more than $11bn a year for the Indian economy in 2020.
This value surge reflects growing investor interest in IPL, particularly from US and Asian markets, amid rising global media rights and sponsorship deals. While there is no direct link between IPL's growth and the ECB's interest rate path, India's expanding global market share could indirectly influence European markets.
