The TCMB released its weekly monetary and banking statistics on July 24. The gross foreign exchange reserves decreased by $3.31 billion, reaching $62.396 billion, down from $65.427 billion on July 17. Meanwhile, gold reserves increased by $5.147 billion, reaching $100.210 billion. Consequently, the total reserves rose by $2.116 billion from the previous week, reaching $162.606 billion. Since January 2024, reserves have climbed to $162.606 billion from $158.600 billion. This move raises questions about how markets will interpret TCMB's liquidity management and exchange rate expectations.
The primary driver behind TCMB's reserve increase appears to be the central bank's efforts to preserve liquidity and support the exchange rate amid continued U.S. inflation control policies. This could signal a shift in interest rate cut expectations.
