Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) has raised a total of $4 billion over the past seven years, including a recent $1 billion funding round. CFS initially aimed to have its Sparc demonstration reactor operational by 2025 but has now set a new target for 2026. The company is now targeting scientific breakeven this year. CFS is constructing its commercial-scale power plant, Arc, in Chesterfield County, Virginia, with plans to start operations in the early 2030s. Google has already purchased half the output of CFS's first power plant. CFS is expected to go public in 2024-2025.
The fusion energy sector is at a pivotal moment, shaping the future of nuclear technology. CFS's success aligns with both the energy crisis and the rising demand for AI data centers, suggesting a short-term surge in IPO activity.
