Hyperscaler Debt Boom: Yields Rise as Investor Demand Cools

The summer of 2026 has seen a surge in corporate borrowing as major U.S. tech firms, including Amazon, Alphabet, Meta, and Oracle, issue a combined $194 billion in bonds—up 79% from $108 billion in all of 2025. Goldman Sachs projects that the five hyperscalers, including Microsoft, will issue $250 billion this year and $400 billion in 2027. Widening spreads over risk-free rates are a key consequence, with median spreads on 2-4 year bonds rising to 40 basis points from 30, and long-term debt spreads surging to 118 basis points from 108.5. Reuters analysis shows that 78 of 91 hyperscaler bonds issued in 2026 are trading at higher yields than at issuance. Colby Stilson, head of fixed income at Brown Advisory, warns that 'investors are betting on future returns, but supply may not abate soon.' Apollo Global Management data reveals cover ratios for hyperscaler bond sales have plummeted from nearly 5x in February to below 2x in July. Amazon's March bond sale was 3.4x oversubscribed, compared to 1.6x in July. Stilson concludes, 'credit markets are already fatigued from supporting this scale of issuance, forcing borrowers to widen spreads in future deals.'
