Avrasya Tunnel's $2.6 Billion Contribution: Turkey's Sustainable Mobility Model

Constructed under the Public-Private Partnership (KÖİ) model by Yapı Merkezi of Turkey and SK Ecoplant of South Korea, the Avrasya Tunnel has provided safe and uninterrupted service for over 180 million travelers in its 9-year operational period, contributing approximately $2.6 billion to Turkey's economy. The tunnel saved users a total of 250 million hours by providing 77 minutes of time savings per crossing, while reducing fuel consumption by 304,000 tons, emissions by 139,000 tons, and crash costs by 687 million vehicle kilometers. Daily average traffic of 77,000 vehicles exceeded the guaranteed traffic volume by 8%, with 30% revenue sharing with the public per crossing. The tunnel reduced electricity consumption by 80% to 6.5 million kilowatt-hours and contributed to renewable energy production. It also earned the ISO 14046 Water Footprint Certification and was recognized by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe with a 'Special Mention' award for its innovative sustainable mobility solutions. As the first project to receive the Blue Dot Network Certification, the tunnel exemplifies sustainable urban infrastructure investments. Operational Director Murat Gücüyener emphasized the tunnel's role beyond intercontinental connectivity, supporting low-carbon transportation and resilient infrastructure for Istanbul's sustainable future. Financial Director Sidem Yavrucu highlighted the tunnel's financial and environmental sustainability, noting its $1.2 billion investment cost.
