Canadian Dairy Cooperative Sells Fine Cheese Business to Lactalis: How Markets React?
Canadian dairy cooperative Agropur has agreed to sell its Quebec cheese brands and production facilities to Lactalis' local unit. The deal includes Oka, Monsieur Gustav, and L'Extra brands. Agropur stated the transaction is part of its strategy to simplify operations and enhance long-term competitiveness. The cheese business, while profitable, represents only 2% of consolidated revenue. Lactalis aims to strengthen its position in Canada's market with this acquisition. Around 400 employees will join Lactalis' Canadian arm. The move follows Lactalis' €9 million investment in a Czech dairy-desserts site and the acquisition of UK-based Protein Works. Lactalis chairman Emmanuel Besnier highlighted this deal as a major opportunity to build on Quebec's flagship brands and cheesemaking expertise.
This acquisition significantly boosts Lactalis' cheese portfolio in Canada, aligning with the company's commitment to delivering high-quality, health-focused dairy products. While the cheese business is a small part of Agropur's total operations, the deal underscores the cooperative's focus on generating maximum value for its members.
