Freight Costs Surge 100% as Global Inflation Risks Deepen

CMA CGM announced emergency fuel surcharges of $65-$165 per container from August 1 due to Hürmüz Strait tensions. The Baltic Dry Index rose over 34% in six months. Freight costs between Japan and Turkey increased from $35 to $68 per unit. Strategists warn that logistics cost hikes could directly boost global inflation by 0.17-0.25 points. The food and retail sectors are expected to be most affected, with lingering effects potentially lasting until Q4 2027.

The Hürmüz Strait crisis, combined with the 34% surge in the Baltic Dry Index, could trigger a compounding effect on global inflation. This may force food and retail sectors to reassess their pricing strategies.
