Gary Stevenson's YouTube Exit: Health Concerns and the End of the Wealth Tax Debate?

Gary Stevenson has announced his departure from his YouTube channel 'Gary’s Economics', citing health concerns. In a 48-minute farewell address, he stated that his weekly videos had become 'harder and harder' to produce and that this would be the last one. The former City trader, who gained prominence through his memoir 'Trading Game' detailing his millions earned at Citibank post-2008 crisis, cited burnout and disillusionment with the City's discipline. Stevenson proposed a 2% tax on individuals with net worth over £10m, claiming it could generate £24bn annually for the Treasury. However, his recent Channel 4 documentary 'How to Get Filthy Rich with Gary Stevenson' faced criticism, with Dan Neidle calling his plans 'populist claptrap'. Stevenson warned of falling living standards, linking them to the rapid wealth transfer from working and middle classes to the top 1%. In his farewell video, he mentioned taking a break in Japan and considering a podcast or monthly video format.
The wealth tax debate continues to gain traction, with new Prime Minister Andy Burnham facing growing calls to tax the ultra-rich. Taxing the 1,000 UK households with net worth over £100m could raise £10bn, according to recent estimates.
