Energy Crisis: Brent Crude Surges to $100 as Oil Production Collapses

The global oil market is facing an unprecedented shock. Just a month ago, analysts were warning of an impending crude oil glut as tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz began to recover amid a U.S.-Iran ceasefire. However, these projections were swiftly overturned as the ceasefire became a distant memory. Now, Yemen's Houthis are striking tankers in the Red Sea, effectively blocking two critical oil chokepoints—the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. As a result, Brent crude has surged above $100 per barrel. Meanwhile, Ukrainian drone strikes on the Caspian Pipeline System's terminus have forced Kazakhstan to suspend nearly 80% of its oil exports through the Novorossiysk port. This has created a daily deficit of 1.7 million barrels in global oil supply. Additionally, attacks on Russian refineries have led to temporary bans on diesel exports, exacerbating global fuel shortages. Ole Hansen, head of commodity strategy at Saxo Bank, noted, 'Unlike crude oil, refined products face far fewer mitigation options. Several Middle Eastern refineries remain affected by the ongoing conflict, while Russia's diesel export restrictions further constrain global availability. Global refining capacity also remains limited, preventing crude supply increases from quickly translating into additional diesel and gasoline production.' This situation is creating a severe crisis in global oil supply, and markets are closely watching how they will respond.
